How It Works:

As amazing as Hummers and HMMWV’s are If you own one, you know that the three common pitfalls are overheating, lack of power, and poor fuel economy.

In pursuit of correcting these issues, we were led to and found that water methanol injection is the best and most effective way to address these key concerns.

When any type of fuel augmentation is introduced to a diesel engine, the result is added power. Unlike gas engines the power in a turbo diesel is largely of function of the fuel. Additional power can be delivered by introducing extra fuel in the form of methanol. The introduction of water prevents pre-ignition of the methanol and reduces the combustion temperature.

The issue with only adding fuel for power augmentation is the exhaust gas temperature increases rapidly which has an adverse effect on life of your engine. The introduction of water adds a layer of protection while reaping the benefits of methanol. Methanol is extremely flammable which is why one should not run 100% methanol. It is best to not exceed a 50/50 mix for optimum performance and cooling. 100% distilled water can also be used if only trying to gain maximum cooling and moderate power gains.

Why Choose Methanol?

Methanol is a clean fuel with an excellent cost to benefit ratio. Its high latent heat of vaporization also makes it an excellent air charge cooler which means a denser mixture and more horsepower.

Benefits of a Methanol Injection:

     2.  LOWER EGT’S - A 50/50 water/methanol mixture can decrease EGTs from 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the main causes of diesel engine failure is high EGTs.

Effectiveness of water/methanol on diesels:

A 50/50 mixture of water/methanol will decrease EGT’s between 200 – 300 degrees Fahrenheit while adding between 50 – 100 horsepower.

Power is usually added to a turbo diesel with fuel; however, constantly adding fuel creates an over-fueling issue and EGTs become prohibitive at over 1300 degrees Fahrenheit. An increase in power is created through air charge cooling and combustion conditioning.

A 50/50 mixture of water/methanol can lower air charge temperatures over 200 degrees Fahrenheit. These lower air temperatures create dense air charge which provides more molecules of oxygen for combustion. Methanol acts as a catalyst for combustion and simultaneously acts as a cooling agent. As water vaporizes inside the combustion chamber, torque and power output are increased through the steam that is created.

Water-methanol injection has been used for years in high performance diesel engine trucks and tractor pullers. Water-methanol has been a go-to for truckers for years in order to increase their fuel mileage.

The water-methanol kit can improve your fuel economy by injecting a precise amount of water-methanol while under the normal driving conditions that include accelerating after a stop or driving up a slight grade.

Hummer/HMMWVs do not come equipped with an intercooler. Some people add turbos to their NA HMMWVs, while others have stock Hummers without intercoolers.  In either case, when adding or increasing boost to an engine, the IATs (Intake Air) need to be reduced. Water methanol cools intake air temperatures without the inefficiency, turbo lag, and cost of installing a body lift and intercooler to an H1.

When adding boost or a turbo charger to your H1, detonation because a concern. The added octane (cetane rating of 4CN) and cooler intake charge reduces detonation by increasing ignition delay as well as increased power under the torque curve during the power stroke (after TDC).

Simply put, water methanol helps prevent detonation or “pre-ignition” which occurs when a cylinder’s air or fuel charge compresses and heats to a point of auto ignition during the compression phase. Water methanol delays the ignition and the available diesel fuel is more efficiently burned in the later stages of combustion.

More power is attained by the fact that the diesel is more efficiently and completely burned along with the added methanol as a fuel source. The fact that more power is generated on the power stroke (as piston is going down after TDC) results in more net positive torque. Water methanol creates “dwell” and works at beyond top dead center giving you 100% safe power.

Expected power gains:

No additional tuning is needed to maximize the water-methanol injection benefits in a diesel application.

• A cooler, denser air charge delivered to the combustion chamber, allowing for more diesel fuel to be burned than before.
• The methanol in the injection fluid burns as a fuel, directly impacting power production.
• Water vaporizes in the combustion chamber, creating rapidly expanding steam which pushes down on the piston creating additional torque.
• The extra power produced is dependent on the concentration of methanol used and the volume injected. The expected power gains with a 50/50 mixture of water/methanol are 50-100 WHP and a 100-150ft lb-ft increase in torque.

So you’re thinking about methanol injection…

Methanol Injection is hands down one of the most popular and best add-on systems for Diesel engines. Adding a mixture of methanol and water into the engine permits the intake air temperature to lower dramatically ultimately resulting in increased ignition timing = more power.

Aside from the advantage of an increase in power, Methanol Injection also provides the benefit of keeping the internal components of the engine clean by "steam cleaning" the valves, valve seats and piston tops. Carbon buildup is reduced which is a common source of detonation.

A 50/50 mixture of Methanol and Water is recommended when making your own fluid. There are several inexpensive ways to make your own fluid. Blue Windshield washer fluid rated at -20°F is approximately 39% Methanol and is readily available at most auto part stores selling for less than $2.00 a gallon.

It is best to reference the Material Data Safety Sheet (MDSS) when looking for Methanol Injection fluid information. Most fluids that are Blue and rated from –20°F to –32°F are safe to use. Never use a windshield washer fluid that contains Glycol as it will contaminate the entire injection system. 

Summary:

Study after study has shown that the effect water methanol has on diesel engines is nothing but great and is highly recommended. It is by far one of the most important upgrades to any H1 Hummer or HMMWV. IT IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST IF YOU HAVE ADDED A TURBO TO YOUR NA MOTOR.
  We have been testing water and methanol for over a year and we absolutely love it.  On top of everything mentioned above methanol and even just plain distilled water make the engine run so smooth. The 6.5l engine responds to methanol more than any other diesel engine we have tested it on. It’s like methanol was made just for humvees! In all reality, the only downfall to adding a water methanol injection system is having to fill up the tank. Even running water alone without methanol shows great increase in overall performance and power.
 In the event of running out of water/methanol, simply turn off the system and your vehicle returns to its original performance.
